Is it OK to Charge for Spiritual Services?

Today I want to touch on a very sensitive topic in the spiritual community - the relationship between Money and Spiritual Services. It is as if there is an imposed “paradox” between spirituality and money. I believe it is something most spiritual workers experience throughout their career or are still struggling with.

Spiritual services, in my opinion, include all services in the metaphysical realms (reiki healing, intuitive readings, spiritual coaching…just to name a few) that are provided with an intention to serve other and raise the vibration of the collective consciousness.

Many spiritual workers are selfless people-pleasers - they are very sensitive to others’ emotions and needs, and they are always doing their best to make sure others are happy and content. Often times, they even feel “guilty” by charging people. There is this inner struggle between helping others and making sure they are financially secure enough to continue doing the work they love. This inner struggle would sometimes manifested into certain clients or people in their life that would either take advantage of them financially or challenging them with the idea of charging.

In essence, everything is energy. When we interact with one another (whether it is by communicating, exchanging services…etc), we are essentially exchanging energy - It is simply a balancing act between giving and receiving in various forms. The reason that “Money” and “Spiritual Services” become this unlikely pair in our society is because most people’s misconceptions on those two terms.

What do most people think of “Money”?

  • Money is evil

  • Money means greed

  • Money is a necessity

  • Money is end of all goals

  • Money is all that matters

  • Money is scarce

  • Money is hard to earn

  • Money is happiness

  • Money is freedom

  • Money is the key to survival and everything else

The list goes on… in general, most people are scared of being deprived of money. They can give you time or other things, but when it comes to money, it becomes a life-and-death struggle for them. It is a result of cultural, societal and parental conditioning. They want to hold on to money as tight as they can because most people feel a lack of money regardless of how much money they have. There is always room for MORE. They believe that in order to get more, they have to spend less and hold on to what they have earned.

What are some common perceptions of “Spiritual Service”?

  • Spiritual Service is charity work and should be free

  • Spiritual Service is holy

  • Spiritual Service is not a necessity

  • Spiritual Service is a voluntary sacrifice from the spiritual worker

  • Spiritual Service is not very practical

The list goes on…Now can you start to see where the discord between the two terms happen? - It is a natural result of people overvaluing “Money” while discounting “Spiritual Services”.

There are a lot of topics I can touch on to neutralize people’s perceptions on these two terms, but my main focus is to explain why charging for spiritual service is as justified as a doctor charging a patient for treatments.

Spiritual Service is like any other work in the service sector - the goal is to serve and help others. Spiritual workers are also endowed with the gifts and skills necessary to assist a person in their healing and life path. The main difference between spiritual service and other line of service work is the key driving intention.

There are exceptions in everything, so I do want to acknowledge the fact that some people might not hold the best intentions in mind while providing so-called “spiritual services”. However, most spiritual workers are awakened souls that have found their life mission, which becomes their driving intention while providing their services. Money is a by-product of those services. I believe a lot of spiritual workers would also be fine with a barter system which does not involve money as long as what they are receiving can sustain their physical needs.

To expect a spiritual worker to provide free service is very unpractical. How could anyone continue with their life mission without having their physical needs been met first? Well unless of course they have transcended their physical body and become a living avatar. If that is the case, they will not be able to serve majority of the population in a way that most spiritual workers can. Unfortunately, at this point of time, we still need money to pay expenses and buy necessities in life. It is something that we can collectively change but it is unlikely to happen anytime soon.

That expectation is also unfair because most spiritual workers pour their heart and soul into everything they do and you can NOT put a price on that. There are special cases where a spiritual worker will feel called to provide a free service to a certain individual. It actually happens more often than you think - in that case, the individual receiving the free service is often sending out so much gratitude and love back to the spiritual worker. It is a fair trade in my opinion. This does not include people who are intentionally trying to take advantage of the kind-heartedness of a spiritual worker.

Spiritual workers truly care about your wellbeing and want to assist you on your spiritual path. They have a calling that is stronger than life itself. As a spiritual worker myself, my belief is always that when I am blessed with more abundance, I can also share and give out more abundance to others.

The ironic thing is that some people think they “gained” something by not paying for a spiritual service - the very feeling of “lack” and action of not “giving” is actually what keeps those people in a standstill financially. They simply can not be endowed with more abundance in life because they are so afraid to give - even when they should rightfully do so.

For other line of service work - the key intention is always to make a living, and the specifics of the work is merely a channel for people to realize that main goal. Work is simply a thing for people to “go through” life or as a bragging right. However, I do believe there are exceptions where people feel called to get in a specific line of work other than spiritual services to fulfill their life mission.

I believe one day most people will be able to relate to money in a more healthy and neutral way. They will also cherish spirituality and make it a natural part of living. After all, we are all spiritual beings having a human physical experience. I would love to hear your opinions on this topic - sending you all so much love and gratitude!
